Preface
By Wang Jianjun
NO BORDERS - Modern Chinese Oil Painting Exhibition, jointly sponsored by the Office of Chinese Language Council International of the PRC and Confucius Institute of College of William and Mary, a famous institute in America, will be held in the Art Museum of Newport News, Virginia, USA with the purpose to promote the exchange of Chinese and western contemporary oil painting arts, build a foreign exhibition platform for Chinese artists, and provide a window for American artists and citizens to understand oriental modern culture and art.
Participants of NO BORDERS are well-known artists from Sichuan, Beijing, Hunan, Guangdong, Guangxi, and other places as well as famous painters from the USA. This cross-regional and cross-border exhibition is of great significance of communication, fusion, openness, and academic nature and the works exhibited are full of artists’ deep praise to arts. It is not only an exchange and dialogue activity about oil paintings between artists from different regions but also a visual feast showing western arts and oriental charms to viewers.
Where is the art going? What is the future of art? These are the questions that every artist has ever thought about. Nowadays globalization is the trend of the world while arts evolve endless forms facing the wave of “globalization”. Regionality and locality is lost in some “globalization” which is a trap leading culture and arts to stagnation and death. It is the true meaning and value of art "globalization" to recognize the existence rationality of different regional culture and arts, understand the spiritual value of different cultural arts, and strengthen dialogues and exchanges between different culture and arts.
The culture and arts in the context of globalization are more in need of cross-regional and cross-border dialogues and exchanges. From this collection of works and the exhibition, we have seen the artistic personalities of artists from different regions and are more aware of the regional characteristics and styles presented by artists. From China to America, NO BORDERS provide an opportunity for Chinese artists to exchange and collide with western culture and can get a glimpse of Chinese artists’ self determination to try to go beyond. This will allow us to see the reform process of Chinese artists facing with "globalization" and further let us to feel the powerful forces for convergence and infinite vitality of NO BORDERS.
The difference of individual life form of "person" is huge and there are infinite forms of art in the vast universe; each person's understanding of art is also different and only the ignorant will say that art is the same. The real difference of people lies in personality and belief and in the realm and the pursuit; the artistic charm of painting lies in the irreplaceable nature of experience and sentiment; every artist is searching for the expression complying with the inner experience and pursuing and experiencing the spiritual implication of arts with works.
A group of the best artists in China are invited at the exhibition; they have their own orientations and artistic values; their works show the recognition to art “globalization”, unique charms of different space arts, and new context and breakthrough of arts; and the works are not limited to the innovation on form but show direct and deep awakening of ideas and minds!
